Why our Organization Exists?
The Global Burden of TMD, Orofacial Pain & Sleep Apnea
Globally, these conditions affect vast numbers of people, with highest rates reaching up to 50% for temporomandibular disorders (TMD), 81% for specific types of orofacial pain, and up to 1 billion individuals globally for sleep apnea. They are highly interconnected and frequently overlap.
1. Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD)
- Global Rate: Nearly one-third of the global population (~29.5%) exhibits at least one sign or symptom of TMD.
- Highest Rates: Population studies estimate the prevalence in certain demographics and clinical groups can range from 30% to 50% worldwide.
- Regional & Demographic Peak: TMD is most prevalent in Europe (~33.8%) and Asia (~27.9%). It affects females at a significantly higher rate than males (~36.7% vs 26.7%).
2. Orofacial Pain
- Global Rate: The general prevalence of orofacial pain (including jaw, mouth, and facial discomfort) ranges from 10% to over 54% in adults, depending on how it is measured.
- Highest Rates: The prevalence of specific types of chronic orofacial pain—like cancer therapy-related pain—can peak at over 80%.
- Breakdown: General chronic orofacial pain affects about 10% to 20% of individuals during their lifetime. It is twice as common in women as in men.
3. Sleep Apnea (Obstructive Sleep Apnea – OSA)
- Global Rate: An estimated 936 million adults (aged 30 to 69) live with mild to severe OSA worldwide.
- Highest Rates: Country-specific prevalence can exceed 50% in certain populations. China, the United States, Brazil, and India account for the highest numbers of affected individuals globally.
- The Overlap: Individuals with TMD have an odds ratio of 2.61 for exhibiting sleep apnea, and about 50% of TMD patients experience OSA.
